Cops to videograph speeches at Pahalgam attack protest events
Nagpur: The city police have stepped up surveillance at programmes related to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, making it clear that any attempt to disturb communal harmony will face legal action. Along with deploying tight security, the police are videographing events such as condolence meetings and protest gatherings to document potential hate speech or provocative acts.
Sources informed that police have adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards unauthorised gatherings. Sadar police recently registered an offence against a group of individuals for organizing a programme at Walker's Street without the necessary permission.
"Even if it's a peaceful event, organisers are mandated to seek police permission. Failure to do so will attract legal consequences," said a senior police official.
The Pahalgam incident has sparked protests in parts of the state, some of which led to communal tension. In response, police commissioner Ravinder Singal has directed strict monitoring and evidence collection to prevent any escalation.
Intelligence units, commonly referred to as ‘khupiya,' at each police station have been tasked with identifying organisers, tracking participants, and closely observing the nature of speeches and slogans at these events. Authorities have also warned that activities such as burning effigies or displaying inflammatory posters will not be tolerated.
With the March 17 communal riot still fresh in public memory, the police are leaving nothing to chance. "Any attempt to incite violence or disrupt peace will be dealt with firmly," the official added.
